What is an electric rise & recline chair?

A comfortable powered armchair with two smooth, motorised movements. It reclines back and raises a footrest so you can relax with your feet up, and it also tilts gently forward and upward to bring you comfortably to your feet when you want to get up. Everything is controlled from a simple handset, so both movements are effortless and you can stop at any position you find comfortable.

How does the rise and recline action work?

Both movements are powered by a quiet motor and controlled from a handset. Press and hold to recline, and the backrest eases down while a footrest rises, stopping wherever you let go; press again to return upright. Press for the rise function and the whole chair tilts gently forward and upward, bringing you to your feet. Because it's powered, each chair needs to sit within reach of a mains socket.

Do the chairs need a power socket?

Yes — these are powered chairs, so each one needs to sit within reach of a mains socket for the motor to work. It's worth planning where the chair will go in relation to your sockets before it arrives, so the handset and power lead reach comfortably and the cable can be routed neatly out of the way.

What ranges are available?

Three ranges — Bilbury, Hunson and Kingsbury — each a comfortable rise & recline armchair with its own style. They share the same effortless handset-controlled recline and rise action, so the choice comes down to the look, proportions and finish you prefer. Each range's exact features and dimensions are listed on its product page, so it's worth comparing them side by side.

What colours are available?

Five easy-to-live-with colours: black, cream, grey, light grey and tan. Black is smart and forgiving; grey is a versatile mid-tone; light grey is a softer, paler grey that keeps a room bright; tan is a warm, natural mid-brown; and cream is a soft, light neutral that's beautiful but, as a paler shade, shows marks more readily. Each product photo shows the exact tone.

What's the difference between grey and light grey?

Two distinct tones. Grey is a mid-toned, contemporary neutral — the versatile all-rounder that grounds a scheme and is reasonably forgiving. Light grey is noticeably paler and softer, closer to a pale silver-grey, which keeps a room feeling bright and airy; being lighter, it shows marks a little more than the mid grey, though still less than the cream. Check the product photo for the true shade.

What are they upholstered in?

Each chair's upholstery is shown on its own product page, which is the best place to confirm exactly what a particular chair is made from before you order. Whatever the covering, follow the care guidance on the product page and care label, deal with spills promptly, and keep the chair out of prolonged direct sunlight to protect the colour. Our showroom team can confirm the material of a specific range if you'd like.

Are they easy to operate?

Yes — everything is controlled from a straightforward handset with clear buttons, so reclining back or rising forward is as simple as a press and hold. There's nothing to lift or lever by hand; the motor does the work smoothly and quietly, and you can stop at any point that feels comfortable. The handset typically tucks neatly at the side of the chair when it's not in use.

What happens in a power cut?

Some powered chairs include a battery backup that lets you return the chair to an upright position if the mains power is off, but this varies by model, so check the product page or ask our team to confirm whether a particular chair has it. If a chair doesn't have a backup, it simply stays in its current position until power returns.

What is your returns policy?

We offer a 14-day change of mind returns window from the day your order is delivered, on items returned in their original condition. To arrange a return, contact our team within those 14 days and we'll talk you through the next steps. This is in addition to your statutory rights, which cover goods that are faulty or not as described.

What happens if my chair arrives damaged?

If it arrives with damage, contact our team as soon as possible — ideally within 48 hours — with a few photographs, and we'll arrange a repair, replacement or collection. It helps to check the chair over on delivery before the team leaves where you can, including testing the recline and rise action with the handset.

Do I need to assemble the chair myself?

There's very little to do. Our two-person team brings the chair into your room and sets it in place, and for these powered chairs it's simply a case of connecting the handset, if needed, and plugging into a nearby socket, so it's ready to use. There are no tools needed from you.

What guarantee comes with these chairs?

Every chair is inspected before it leaves us, and your purchase is protected by your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, which cover goods that are faulty or not as described. You also have our 14-day change of mind returns. For confirmation of any specific manufacturer guarantee, including the motor and handset, please check the product page or ask our team before you order.
