Leather Aire Care Guide

Leather Aire Sofa Care Guide

  • Breathable leather-look

  • No conditioning
  • Weekly routine
  • Expert advice from Furniture Instore

Leather Aire is one of the most practical sofa materials you can buy - engineered for busy, real-life homes. It gives you the look and feel of leather, but with a sealed, high-performance surface that genuine and faux leather can't match: it's wipe-clean, UV-resistant, more scratch-resistant than most leather, and it never needs conditioning. That last point is the golden rule - Leather Aire is sealed and non-porous, so leather conditioner can't soak in and only leaves a greasy film. Care is refreshingly simple: a dry wipe most days, a barely-damp wipe once a week, and quick action on the rare spill that doesn't just wipe straight off. Looked after this way, a Valencia, Valerie or Cinema sofa stays looking excellent for eight to twelve years and beyond. This guide covers the full routine, stain removal, scratch care and keeping it at its best in sunny rooms.

What Makes Leather Aire Different

Leather Aire is a proprietary engineered fabric - not genuine leather, and not standard faux leather, but its own category. The difference that matters day to day is its sealed, non-porous surface: spills sit on top and wipe away in seconds, it doesn't absorb oils or moisture, and it doesn't need feeding or conditioning. Because nothing soaks in, conditioner is not just unnecessary - it's actively wrong, leaving a sticky film that attracts dust.

Weekly Care Routine

Leather Aire is genuinely low-effort - this is all it needs.

  1. Dry wipe as needed.

A dry microfibre cloth lifts fingerprints, dust and light marks - enough for most days.

  2. Damp wipe weekly.

A barely-damp cloth (well wrung out) removes skin oils and residue; follow immediately with a dry cloth.

  3. Check seams and edges.

Grime gathers in the stitching and along seat fronts - a soft brush or cotton bud cleans these precisely.

  4. Rotate & flip cushions.

Weekly rotation spreads compression and keeps the seats in shape.

Deep Clean, Step by Step

Every month or so, or whenever it needs more than a wipe.

  1. Mix a mild solution.

A few drops of baby soap or mild washing-up liquid in warm water. Dampen a soft cloth - barely damp; never soak Leather Aire.

  2. Test a hidden area.

Apply to the back or under a cushion, wait 5 minutes, dry, and check for any change.

  3. Wipe methodically.

One panel at a time in gentle circles, with extra attention to arm tops and seat fronts.

  4. Rinse off the soap.

Go over with a clean cloth dampened in plain water - residue attracts dirt.

  5. Dry immediately.

Wipe dry with a clean cloth. Never leave Leather Aire damp.

Never use on Leather Aire

Solvent cleaners, white spirit, acetone, bleach or abrasive cloths - they permanently dissolve the surface coating. And never apply leather conditioner: it can't penetrate the sealed surface and leaves a greasy residue.

Stain Removal

Most spills simply wipe off. For the few that don't, act fast, blot with a clean cloth, and test any product on a hidden area first.

  • Coffee, tea, soft drinks

    Do this straight away

Wipe with a damp cloth - usually all it takes - then dry.

    Avoid

    Leaving it to dry on.

  • Grease & food oil

    Do this straight away

Blot with a dry cloth, then mild soap on a damp cloth; rinse and dry.

    Avoid

    Solvents or degreasers.

  • Ink & pen

    Do this straight away

Dab precisely with rubbing alcohol on a cotton bud (test first), then wipe clean.

    Avoid

Rubbing - it spreads the ink.

  • Hair dye & beauty products

    Do this straight away

Act in seconds: blot, then mild soap. One of the few things that can stain Leather Aire if left.

    Avoid

    Waiting; harsh removers.

  • Chewing gum

    Do this straight away

Harden with an ice pack, peel off, clean the residue with mild soap.

    Avoid

    Pulling it while soft.

  • Pet accidents

    Do this straight away

Wipe at once, mild soap, then a Leather-Aire-safe odour neutraliser; check the seams.

    Avoid

    Letting it soak into stitching.

  • Nail varnish

    Do this straight away

Blot immediately and call us on 02476 705 600 for advice.

    Avoid

Nail varnish remover (acetone) - it permanently damages the surface.

  • Permanent marker

    Do this straight away

Act at once: dab very precisely with rubbing alcohol, then wipe clean.

    Avoid

Rubbing; leaving it to dry (may become permanent).

Surface Scratches & Scuffs

Light scuffs and minor scratches often buff out with a clean, dry microfibre cloth - the warmth of friction smooths the surface coating. For more visible scratches, a colour-matched Leather Aire or leather-look repair kit (available online) works well. For deeper scratches that have broken through the coating, call us on 02476 705 600 with your model name and colour and we'll advise on the best repair for your sofa.

Protecting Your Leather Aire Sofa

A few simple habits keep it looking new for years. Tap each to expand.

Never use leather conditioner

This is the number-one rule. Leather Aire's sealed surface can't absorb conditioner, so it just sits on top as a greasy, dust-attracting film. It never needs feeding.

Never use solvents, acetone or abrasives

White spirit, acetone, bleach, solvent cleaners, magic erasers and scouring pads dissolve or scratch the coating. Mild soap and water is all you ever need.

Wipe dry - never leave it wet

Use only a barely-damp cloth and dry the surface straight afterwards. Leather Aire should never be soaked or left damp.

Act on spills immediately

Most spills wipe straight off, but the sooner the better - hair dye, cosmetics and nail varnish are the rare exceptions that can mark if left. See the stain guide above.

Keep it out of direct heat & sustained sun

Leather Aire is more UV-resistant than most leather, but sustained direct sun will still fade panels unevenly over time. Use blinds or curtains during peak hours (10am-3pm), consider UV-filtering film on large south-facing windows, and rotate the sofa seasonally if one side gets far more sun.

Protect from pet claws

Leather Aire is more scratch-resistant than faux leather, but repeated claw contact marks any surface. Keep pet nails trimmed and use a washable throw where your pet sits regularly.

Rotate & flip cushions weekly

We all sit in the same spot. Rotating and flipping cushions spreads the wear so the seats keep their shape and colour for longer.

Extra Dos & Don'ts

Quick pointers not already covered above.

Do

  • Buff light scuffs with a dry microfibre cloth before reaching for anything else.
  • Keep a colour-matched Leather Aire repair kit for the odd deeper scratch.
  • Clean the stitching and seams with a soft brush or cotton bud.
  • Lift the sofa from its base to move it.

Don't

  • Use baby wipes routinely - some contain alcohol that degrades the coating over time.
  • Use a steam cleaner - heat damages the surface.
  • Use nail-varnish remover - acetone permanently damages Leather Aire.
  • Treat it like genuine leather - it needs no conditioning at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Leather Aire real leather?

No. Leather Aire is a high-performance engineered fabric designed to look and feel like leather with superior everyday practicality. It's neither genuine leather nor standard faux leather - it's a distinct material category.

Does Leather Aire need conditioning?

Never. Its sealed, non-porous surface can't absorb conditioning products - applying them just leaves a greasy residue. This is the single most important care rule for Leather Aire.

How do I remove ink from Leather Aire?

Dab precisely with rubbing alcohol on a cotton bud - don't rub - then wipe clean with a damp cloth. Test on a hidden area first, and act quickly; ink is far easier to remove while fresh.

Can I use a steam cleaner on Leather Aire?

No. Steam can damage the surface coating. Use a barely-damp cloth with mild soap instead - never any heat-based cleaning method.

Does Leather Aire scratch easily?

It's more scratch-resistant than genuine leather. Light scuffs often buff out with a dry microfibre cloth. Repeated contact from sharp objects or pet claws can mark it over time, so a washable throw in high-contact spots helps.

Is Leather Aire good for pets?

Yes - one of the most pet-friendly materials available. Muddy paw prints, hair and drool wipe off easily. For urine, act immediately and use an odour neutraliser. Keep claws trimmed and use a throw where your pet sits.

What's the difference between Leather Aire and PU (faux) leather?

PU leather is a polyurethane coating over a fabric backing that wipes clean but can peel with heat or age. Leather Aire is a proprietary engineered fabric with higher UV resistance, greater durability and lower peeling risk. Similar cleaning, very different lifespan.

My Valencia sofa has a colour difference between panels - is that normal?

Small variation between panels is normal in manufacturing. A more noticeable difference on one panel usually means it has had more UV exposure. Reposition the sofa or use window coverings to prevent further variation.

How long does Leather Aire last?

With proper care, 8-12+ years looking excellent, and well beyond that in serviceable use - significantly better than standard faux leather and comparable to a well-kept fabric sofa.

Can I use baby wipes to clean my Leather Aire sofa?

Not as a regular method. Some baby wipes contain alcohol or chemicals that gradually degrade the surface coating with repeated use. A barely-damp microfibre cloth is the right everyday tool.
